Colette and Rob

Saturday, 30 May, was one of those rare South Coast days that seemed made for celebration. At Laughing Forest Wedding Venue in Elysium, Rob and Colette Gillespie were surrounded by the kind of natural beauty and quiet charm that turns a wedding into something unforgettable. It was a day worthy of a beautiful beginning, and a place worthy of being remembered.

Elysium village is one of the best-kept secrets of the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. In places, the land rises just enough to offer sweeping views of the ocean, making whale and sea life activity easy to observe. The seven-kilometre stretch of beach is mostly vacant, creating a wild-coast feeling that is both peaceful and surprisingly close to home. It is a setting that offers space, stillness and a sense of discovery—everything a memorable wedding destination should have.

At this time of year, the ocean lies shiny and flat, with very little wind and a gentle temperature of around 23 degrees—conditions that feel just right. That perfect balance of warmth, calm and sea air gave the day an effortless elegance. The weather did not compete with the occasion; it complemented it, allowing every detail of the celebration to settle naturally into the landscape.

For Rob and Colette Gillespie, Laughing Forest provided more than just a venue; it provided a backdrop that reflected the warmth, beauty and significance of the occasion. Surrounded by coastal serenity and the natural character of Elysium, their wedding became both an intimate personal memory and a showcase of what makes this destination so special. It was a celebration filled with place, presence and the quiet magic that lingers long after the day itself has passed.

Rob and Colette are both in the autumn of their lives, and in finding one another at this mature and meaningful stage, they remind us of the quiet strength of authentic love. Their union speaks to the beauty of embracing life fully, of recognising the good in one another, and of stepping forward with gratitude, hope and readiness for all that shared love can still bring. It is a love story shaped not only by romance, but by depth, understanding and the joy of being truly seen.

The ceremony itself was beautifully guided by Dianne Visser, who brought her usual jovial yet loving touch to the occasion. Her warm presence was echoed by the setting: a gentle wave rolling in from the shining Indian Ocean, hardly a breath of air, and a stillness that seemed to bless the moment. The forest, manicured as only a coastal estate can be, stood in quiet elegance while the birds seemed to hum their own tune of approval. Don from Big Bear Entertainment carried the mood effortlessly, delivering the perfect vibe and performing songs that truly hit the spot, especially his rendition of Comfortably Numb, made famous by Pink Floyd. Menzi, the in-house chef, together with his team, served scrumptious starters, generous pork and chicken mains, and a dessert course that completed the celebration in style. And then there was Debbie, the true trump card of Laughing Forest, whose magic touch could be seen in everything from the décor and flowers to the calm, steady way in which the entire day was held together. As always, she kept everything flowing on an even keel with a rock-steady hand.

Another part of Laughing Forest’s appeal is the exclusivity it offers. Weddings here are not shared with anyone other than the invited guests, allowing each celebration to feel private, personal and entirely its own. While this is not a golf course or a venue crowded with multiple unrelated activities, there is a fun golfing chip-and-putt facility for wedding guests to enjoy. On-site accommodation for 34 guests is a major feature, with a further 80 beds available close by, making it easy for family and friends to settle in and share the full experience. The licensed bar offers reasonable prices, a refreshing contrast to many larger corporate-style venues in the same space, and secure on-site parking adds yet another layer of convenience and comfort.

For couples looking for a wedding setting that feels naturally beautiful, deeply romantic and wonderfully removed from the ordinary, Laughing Forest Wedding Venue in Elysium offers something truly rare. It represents outstanding value for money, comparable with the best prices on offer, while delivering one of the most private beachside wedding settings imaginable. With welcoming accommodation, thoughtful facilities, food and service that stand above most South Coast standards, and one of the most experienced yet authentically focused wedding planners in the business, Laughing Forest creates a celebration that feels both effortless and deeply personal.

For Rob and Colette, it will always be the place where an extraordinary day unfolded with grace, warmth and meaning—held in the heart of one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most quietly spectacular seaside villages.  Wishing them all the joy and happiness as they start a new chapter in their lives.
